Since 1947, India had a total of 15 Prime Ministers, one of whom was also an interim PM. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India, serving as the Prime Minister of India from 15 August 1947 to 26 January 1950. The Prime Minister of India is the head of government, and is appointed by the President of India after the political party. After winning the General Lok Sabha election, a candidate is nominated for the post. After that, the leader of that political party is appointed as the Prime Minister of India. The Prime Minister of India is the head of the ruling central government. All the effective executive power rests with the Council of Ministers which is headed by the Prime Minister (प्रधानमंत्री). Indian Constitution article 78 specifies the duties of the Prime Minister of India. PM acts as a link between the president and cabinet while discharging his duties.
